Cookie Policy

1. Who is responsible

The party responsible for the use of cookies on guay.news is WEBSITESYSEO S.L., tax ID (NIF) B27442433 (NIF-IVA: ESB27442433), with registered address at Calle Antonio Rosón 1, 27002 Lugo (Spain), publisher of GUAY.news. For any question about this policy, please write to info@guay.news.

This policy complies with Article 22.2 of Spanish Law 34/2002 (LSSI-CE), Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (GDPR) and the Guide on the use of cookies issued by the Spanish Data Protection Agency (AEPD), as updated in July 2023. The processing of personal data obtained through cookies is also governed by our Privacy Policy.

2. What cookies and similar technologies are

A cookie is a small file that a website stores in your browser when you visit it and can read on later visits. It is used, for example, to keep you logged in, remember what you have put in your basket or know whether you have already answered the cookie banner.

The law applies not only to cookies but to any device for storing and retrieving data on your equipment. In this policy we use the word «cookies» also to refer to:

• Local browser storage (localStorage and sessionStorage), which allows data to be stored on your device in a similar way to a cookie. For example, the YouTube player stores entries of the type yt-remote-*.
• Pixels or web beacons: tiny images or snippets of code that notify a server when a page or email is opened. GUAY.news does not use tracking pixels on the website or in the newsletter.
• Fingerprinting: techniques that identify a device by combining its characteristics. We do not use them.

3. Types of cookies

By who manages them

• First-party: sent to your device from a domain managed by us (guay.news).
• Third-party: sent from a domain not managed by us but by another entity, such as Google (YouTube) or Stripe.

By purpose

• Technical or necessary: essential to provide a service you have requested (browsing, logging in, buying, paying securely, remembering your cookie choice). They are exempt from consent under Article 22.2 LSSI-CE.
• Preference or personalisation: they remember information so that the site behaves in a particular way. If they reflect an option you expressly choose (for example, language), they are exempt; otherwise they require consent.
• Analytics or statistics: they allow the use of the site to be measured and analysed. They require consent.
• Advertising or third-party cookies for their own purposes: those set by third parties (for example, video platforms) which may be used for their own purposes, including behavioural advertising. They require consent.

By duration

• Session: deleted when you close the browser.
• Persistent: they remain on your device for the period shown in the table in section 11, unless you delete them earlier. We aim to keep their duration to the minimum necessary for their purpose.

4. The categories in our banner

We group GUAY.news cookies into four categories, which are the ones you see when you click «Settings» in the banner:

If we add a new cookie in the future, we will classify it in the appropriate category and, if it requires consent, it will not be used until you accept it.

5. How our banner works

GUAY.news uses its own consent management system, designed in line with the AEPD’s criteria:

• First layer with three buttons: «Accept», «Reject» and «Settings». Accept and reject are equally visible, the same size and on the same level; rejecting does not require any more steps than accepting.
• Second layer («Settings»): lets you switch each category on or off separately. Optional categories are switched off by default.
• Nothing optional is loaded before you decide. Until you respond, only necessary cookies operate.
• Continuing to browse, scrolling or closing the banner is not acceptance. We only treat you as consenting when you click «Accept» or switch on a category and save your choice.
• No cookie walls. You can read all the news, register, comment and buy whether you accept or reject. The only difference is that, if you reject the third-party category, each YouTube video will be shown blocked until you decide to load it.
• Valid for 12 months. We store your choice for 12 months, shorter than the maximum of 24 months allowed by the AEPD. After that period, or earlier if we change this policy or the cookies we use in a significant way, we will ask you again.
• Proof of consent. To be able to demonstrate that you have consented, as required by Article 7(1) GDPR, we record a random identifier, the policy version, the categories you accept or reject, the date and time, your IP address truncated and hashed (so that the full IP is not stored) and a summary description of the browser. We keep this record for 3 years.

6. Statistics without cookies

To know how many people read GUAY.news, which stories are of most interest and what kind of device people read us on, we use our own measurement system, hosted on our servers, which does not set cookies or store or read information on your device. It works with the data your browser necessarily sends when loading any page:

• it anonymises the IP address before processing it;
• it does not create profiles or persistent identifiers that would allow you to be tracked;
• it does not share data with third parties or combine it with other sources;
• it provides only aggregated data (page views, most-read stories, sections, general origin of visits, device and browser type).

Since it does not access your equipment to store or retrieve information, this measurement is not subject to consent under Article 22.2 LSSI-CE. The processing, which is minimal and anonymised, is based on our legitimate interest in understanding the newspaper’s audience and improving it; you may object by writing to info@guay.news. Raw logs are kept for a maximum of 13 months. You will find more information in the Privacy Policy.

7. Third-party services: YouTube, Google AdSense and Stripe

YouTube videos

In the videos section and in some stories we embed YouTube videos, a Google service. When a YouTube player loads, Google may set cookies and use your browser’s local storage for its own purposes, including measurement and advertising.

For this reason, videos are blocked and you see an image with a notice instead. The player only loads if:

• you have accepted the «Marketing / third parties» category, in which case videos load directly; or
• you click the button to load that specific video. In that case you consent only for that video, on that page; the others remain blocked.

YouTube’s «privacy-enhanced mode» (youtube-nocookie.com) reduces the cookies set before a video is played, but it does not eliminate the use of storage on your device, so it does not remove the need for consent and we do not treat it as if it did. You can see how Google processes your data in its Privacy Policy.

Google AdSense advertising

To fund the newspaper we show Google AdSense ads, a service of Google Ireland Limited. Ads are always kept apart from the news and labelled as advertising, as explained in our Advertising policy.

We use Google Consent Mode: until you accept the «Marketing / third parties» category, advertising storage (ad_storage), use of data for advertising (ad_user_data) and personalisation (ad_personalization) are denied. In that state Google may only show non-personalised or limited ads, without setting advertising cookies or using your device to build a profile.

If you accept the «Marketing / third parties» category, Google may set cookies such as __gads, __gpi or __eoi (up to 13 months) and use browser identifiers to show you interest-based ads, cap how often you see an ad and measure performance. You can withdraw consent at any time from «Cookie settings» and manage personalisation in Google’s My Ad Center. More information on how Google uses data from sites that use its services.

Payment with Stripe

When you pay for a shop order, the payment form is provided by Stripe, which sets the cookies __stripe_mid (1 year) and __stripe_sid (30 minutes) for the sole purpose of preventing fraud and ensuring the security of the payment. These cookies are only loaded on the payment page, are necessary for the payment service you request and therefore do not require consent. GUAY.news does not see or store your card details. More information in the Stripe Privacy Policy.

8. Shop and comments

Shop (WooCommerce)

The basket cookies (woocommerce_cart_hash, woocommerce_items_in_cart and wp_woocommerce_session_[hash], the latter lasting 2 days) are necessary for the shop to remember what you have added and for you to complete your purchase. By contrast, the order attribution cookies sbjs_*, which WooCommerce uses to record where visits that end in an order came from, are statistical and are only set if you accept the «Statistics» category. If you do not accept it, your order is processed in exactly the same way, simply without that origin information.

Comments

When writing a comment you can tick the box «Save my name, email and website in this browser for the next time I comment». Only if you tick it does WordPress store the cookies comment_author_[hash], comment_author_email_[hash] and comment_author_url_[hash] for 347 days. The box is never ticked by default, and by ticking it you are expressly requesting that feature.

9. The GUAY.news app

The iOS and Android app does not use third-party cookies or include third-party advertising or tracking SDKs, and does not track you across apps: it does not access Apple’s advertising identifier (IDFA) or Android’s (Android Advertising ID). The app stores on your device only the information it needs to work (your session if you log in, your favourite sections and your preferred notification time) and sends anonymous usage statistics to our own server. Push notifications require your operating system’s permission and are explained in the Privacy Policy.

If you open a page of the website in the browser from the app, this policy and the website’s banner apply.

10. International transfers through third-party cookies

First-party cookies do not involve international transfers. Third-party cookies may do so:

• Google (YouTube): in the European Economic Area the service is provided by Google Ireland Limited, but data may be processed by Google LLC in the United States. Google LLC participates in the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, which is the subject of the European Commission’s adequacy decision of 10 July 2023 (upheld by the General Court in Case T-553/23 on 3 September 2025), and also applies standard contractual clauses.
• Stripe: data may be processed by Stripe, Inc. in the United States, under the same EU-US Data Privacy Framework and standard contractual clauses (Decision (EU) 2021/914).

These transfers only take place when those cookies are loaded: for YouTube and personalised AdSense ads, if you consent; for Stripe, when you access the payment page.

The inventory is kept up to date automatically: when our system detects a new cookie on the site, it adds it to the list so that we can review and classify it.

12. How to change or withdraw your consent

You can change your choice or withdraw your consent at any time, as easily as you gave it, using this button:

You will also find the «Cookie settings» link in the footer of every page of the website. When you withdraw consent we stop using the cookies in that category. Third-party cookies already set (for example, YouTube’s) may remain in your browser until you delete them yourself, as explained in the next section. Withdrawal does not affect the lawfulness of prior use.

13. How to block or delete cookies in your browser

In addition to our panel, you can allow, block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Please note that if you block all cookies, some necessary features (such as logging in or buying) may stop working, and that if you delete the guay_consent cookie we will show you the banner again.

• Google Chrome (computer, Android and iOS): Clear, allow and manage cookies in Chrome
• Mozilla Firefox (computer): Clear cookies and site data in Firefox
• Safari (Mac): Manage cookies and website data in Safari
• Safari (iPhone and iPad): Clear the history and cookies from Safari on your iPhone

14. Changes to this policy and further information

We will update this policy when the cookies we use or the legislation change. The version and effective date appear at the top. If the change is significant (for example, a new purpose or a new third party), we will ask for your consent again through the banner.

To exercise your rights of access, rectification, erasure, objection, restriction and portability over data obtained through cookies, or to lodge a complaint with the Spanish Data Protection Agency, please see the Privacy Policy.

This is an English version of the Spanish original. In the event of any discrepancy, the Spanish version prevails, unless mandatory consumer protection legislation provides otherwise.
